Embankment and pre-load fill monitoring typically utilize Settlement Plates and Settlement Pins. Whereas trenchless and tunnelling monitoring use Settlement Rods. Settlement Plates and Components
Each Settlement Plate is consists of: A base plate, a number of extensions (based on maximum height of the pre-load/surcharge), a required number of couplers, and a survey top-cap. Some of the most common sizes and styles for MTO and Ontario based jobs are below.
500 mm. SQ Settlement Plate
Product: SP-BP5
Description: This is the most common required MTO style plate, 500 x 500 x 6.35 mm steel plate with 25 mm OD threaded rod attachment.
500 mm. SQ Settlement Plate – Reverse Thread
Product: SP-BP5R
Description: This is a modification of the 500 SQ plate, with a reverse thread. This allows the entire length of rod to be disconnected and removed at the end of the project.
1.5 m Height Extensions
Product: SP-E15
Description: This is a modification of the 500 SQ plate, with a reverse thread. This allows the entire length of rod to be disconnected and removed at the end of the project.
Survey Top Cap
Product: SP-MTC
Description: This is a 25 mm OD rounded cap for the top of the rod. It is intended for manual surveying.
Target Top Cap
Product: SP-ATC
Description: This is a 25 mm OD rounded cap with a double sided 60 x 60 mm reflective survey target. It is intended for surveying using a Total Station.
Settlement Pins and Components
Settlement Pins are commonly used once the embankment/pre-load reaches maximum height. They are placed in shallow pits along the top edges of the embankment for monitoring movement of the top of the fill. Additionally, they are commonly used on culverts or other infrastructure passing through the fill.
Settlement Pin Complete
Product: PI-C
Description: The complete set includes all the components for one pin: 25 mm OD rod w/angled top, 300 mm OD x 300 mm deep concrete form, rod centering set tool, and two (2) bags of ready mix 25 MPa concrete. Just add water.
Settlement Pin Basic
Product: PI-B
Description: The basic set includes: 25 mm OD rod w/angled top and 300 mm OD x 300 mm deep concrete form. If you saved the centering tools from your last job and have your own concrete. (The centering tool and concrete can also be purchase through the ‘Tools’ section below)
Settlement Rods and Temporary Benchmarks
With names like; Sub-surface Settlement Points, Settlement Monitoring Points, and Deep Settlement Points, Settlement Rods go by many names. Designs range from M15 rebar in 22 mm PVC sleeves to 25 mm pipe in 50 mm steel sleeves, with many variations. They all typically involve 2-4 components; a steel rod or pipe, a friction reducing sleeve, and occasionally a protective cover and/or centralizers. Temporary Benchmarks often consist of the same components, but are installed to a deeper elevation.

Solid Settlement Rod
Product: SR-SR
Description: One 15M rebar 1.8 m long, a 20 mm PVC friction reducing sleeve, and a flush cover. Price is per unit.
Pipe Settlement Rod
Product: SR-PR
Description: One 25 mm OD steel pipe 1.8 m long, a rounded survey cap, a 50 mm PVC friction reducing sleeve, and a flush cover. Price is per unit.
Shallow Settlement Point
Product: SR-SH
Description: Shallow settlement points are typically seen requested for CN, CP, and MX railway crossings. 15M rebar 1.1 m long, a 25 mm PVC friction reducing sleeve, and flush cover. Price is per unit.
Deep Settlement Rods and Temporary Benchmarks
Product: SR-DP
Description: 25 mm OD pipe to bedrock or above utility obvert, a 50 mm PVC friction reducing sleeve, and centralizers. Pipes are available in 1.5 m and 3 m lengths, with 6 m length by special request. Price is per m.
